Rata Ruru / Morepork

I carved this ruru/ morepork out of some beautiful swamp rata. Rata is naturally reddish. This piece came from a tree that was buried and preserved giving it a rich brown colour.
Even though rata is a very hard wood it’s a lot softer than bone or stone so will need some extra care. I wouldn’t get it wet or leave it in the sun etc.
Material – Swamp Rata (native NZ wood)
