Chalcedony / Carnelian

Chalcedony is a form of silica which is found in a lot of countries including New Zealand. It has different varieties based on the colour and pattern. When chalcedony is yellow/orange it is called Carnelian. Our chalcedony and carnelian is often from the Coromandel.

Carving-wise it is harder than Pounamu so take longer and wears out my tools faster. The reward is a brilliant colour and translucence.
