Pounamu Little Black Shag – Steps

I call this type of carving a picture pendant. It allows me to carve a full scene showing the bird in its environment with other design elements. This piece is called Face the Sun. I’ve made the sun thinner than the rest of the background so it glows when held up to the light.

    There were a couple of black parts in the stone so I had to redesign the branch a bit to include them.

    One of the most challenging aspects of this type of carving is getting the background flat without hollows.
