Pounamu Weta Sculpture – wip #3
This will be a sculpture of a Pounamu NZ tree Weta on a carved wooden base.
I’ve finish my 3d sketch of the base and weta and am onto the final base which I’m making out of swamp Rata. It is a hard, dense wood to work but rewards you with its wonderful colour and grain.
As you can see the base starts off footed like my other pieces and then evolves into a more realistic texture. This transition is my main challenge at the moment, it needs to seem natural and not forced.
I’ve attached photos of a pair of stag beetles fighting. I called the piece ” The Balance”, and along with the two cabbage moths (my peace doves) mirrors the balancing forces of destruction and renewal in nature.
More soon
